EICR Testing

This is what is in my certificates:

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a document that records the condition of an electrical installation. It is produced by a qualified electrician who will inspect the installation and carry out a series of tests to check for any defects or hazards.

The EICR procedure typically follows these steps:

The electrician will carry out a visual inspection of the electrical installation. This will involve checking for any obvious defects, such as damaged cables, loose connections, or exposed wires.
The electrician will then carry out a series of tests to check the electrical safety of the installation.

These tests may include:
Insulation resistance test: This test checks the resistance of the insulation on the cables.
Continuity test: This test checks the continuity of the conductors in the cables.
Earth fault loop impedance test: This test checks the resistance of the earthing system.
RCD test: This test checks the operation of the residual current devices (RCDs).
The electrician will then produce an EICR report, which will record the results of the inspection and tests. The report will also include recommendations for any repairs or improvements that are needed.

The frequency of EICRs depends on the type of property and the age of the electrical installation. For example, in England and Wales, the following frequency applies:

Domestic properties: Every 10 years
Rented properties: Every 5 years
Commercial properties: Every 5 years (or more frequently if required by the relevant regulations)
It is important to have your electrical installation inspected and tested regularly to ensure its safety. An EICR can help to identify any potential hazards and make sure that your electrical system is up to date with the latest safety standards.

Here are some of the benefits of having an EICR:

It can help to identify any potential hazards and make sure that your electrical system is safe.

  • It can help to reduce the risk of fire or electric shock.

  • It can help to improve the energy efficiency of your home or business.

  • It can help to increase the value of your property.

  • It can help to comply with legal requirements.

  • If you are a landlord, you are legally required to have an EICR carried out for your rental property every 5 years. If you are a homeowner, you are not legally required to have an EICR, but it is still a good idea to have one done every 10 years.

If you are considering having an EICR, it is important to choose a qualified electrician who is registered with a recognized body, such as NICEIC or ELECSA. You should also ask for a copy of the EICR report to keep for your records.
